Leadership Training program for the office bearers of Coconut producer societies(cps)
Kerala with over 4,20,000 farmers engaged in coconut farming, is a major producer of coconut, most of which is used to produce coconut oil. With the variation in the prices of coconut oil, the farmers’ lot is that of uncertainty and as a result, they have been neglecting the crop in favour of more lucrative sources of income. Individually, they have very little hope of changing these circumstances.
The basic problem faced by the farmers is that, as individuals, they are unable to bring down the cost of production. The Coconut Development Board - the apex supporting body for the support of coconut farmers, had already initiated various interventions to improve crop yield. The Board has now developed an action plan and has set in motion, the procedure for setting up CPS by the farmers. These Societies could collectively bring down the input costs and increase the revenue by collecting coconuts, in order to either sell them at better rates or to set up oil extraction plants, coconut drying units, or opting for other methods by which revenues could be maximized.
In order for these Societies to function well, they need strong leadership and clear goals. Therefore, the Coconut Development Board assigned SB Global Educational Trust to impart a 3 day Leadership Training Programme for the office bearers of Coconut Producers Societies and Coconut Producers Federation in Kasargode District, Kerala.
